Abstract

In 1994 the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (OAR) and NAU's Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) initiated a summer internship program to facilitate undergraduate and graduate summer experiences at various EPA laboratories and other sites throughout the country. While not exclusive, the program is directed towards Native American students who are pursuing degrees in environmental engineering or science, environmental management, public policy and other environmentally related careers. Through 1997, 28 students have participated in this program; 57% of the students have been Native American. Evaluation of the program indicates that every intern has encountered substantive, complex, challenging tasks. All interns have commented positively on the learning value of the program have either graduated or are continuing to seek a degree in an environmentally related major. Graduated interns are currently working in the environmental field; some interns have returned for a second internship due to positive experiences in the program. Exit interviews have indicated that all would seriously consider a professional career with EPA in various capacities.
