Genotyping (Subtyping) Bacteria

Abstract

Genotyping, or subtyping, bacteria has been practiced for decades using phenotypic variation, but recently has undergone a revolution due to DNA-based methods. Systematic sampling of nucleotide variation across whole genomes has led to the robust identification of bacterial types and subtypes. Whole genome sequencing is replacing other methods and will lead to more rigorous molecular epidemiological and evolutionary analyses.
